VIMP as live streaming platform

VIMP als Livestreaming-Plattform

At the moment we receive more and more inquiries how VIMP can be used as a live streaming platform, for example to offer lectures for students online. In this article we will show you a simple possibility for this.

As a university or a company, you are faced with the problem that you have to maintain operations despite the current Corona crisis. Thanks to numerous online tools, it is fortunately possible in many areas to work temporarily from home as an employee. But what about events such as lectures or staff meetings?

This is where conventional collaboration tools reach their limits and you need an online streaming solution that allows you to film a speaker, for example, and show slides at the same time.

VIMP can be perfectly combined with suitable tools as a broadcast platform for the creation of such streams in order to provide the streams for your staff or students.

One of these tools is OBS Studio or its even more user-friendly enhancement Streamlabs OBS. The free “Open Broadcaster Software” is available for Windows, Linux and macOS and allows you to process multiple streams into one and then make it available as a stream.

In the simplest case, for example, you can record the speaker with the webcam while simultaneously displaying a presentation.

You can also bundle more than two streams from different sources, create and crossfade scenes and process multiple audio tracks.

In VIMP you can create as many livestreams as you like, which you can make available for different target groups with different permission settings.

Der VIMP Installationsservice beinhaltet:

  • Vorbereitung Ihres Servers
  • Installation der erworbenen VIMP Software
  • Installation der Transcoding Tools

Um von außen auf Ihren Server zugreifen zu können, benötigen wir folgendes:

  • SSH-Zugriff auf Ihren Server (idealerweise als root)
  • Vorinstalliertes Hosting (Apache + MySQL/MariaDB)

Wir empfehlen Linux als Betriebssystem. Eine Installation unter UNIX, BSD oder Windows ist ebenfalls möglich, wird von uns aber nicht offiziell unterstützt.

Minimale Servervoraussetzungen für die Installation von VIMP:

Webserver

  • Apache2
    • Version 2.4 empfohlen
  • oder NGINX

PHP

  • Version 7.1 – 8.0
  • GD-Bibliothek, openssl, cURL, MySQL, mbstring, PDO, pdo_mysql und XSL-Erweiterungen müssen installiert sein
  • PHP CLI (Command Line Interface) muss installiert sein
  • SourceGuardian Extension (außer für ViMP Ultimate Extended)

MySQL/MariaDB

  • MySQL: Version 5.7 – 8.0
  • MariaDB: Mindestens Version 10.2
  • InnoDB muss installiert sein

Transcoding
Die Transcoding-Tools bitte genau wie in der Dokumentation beschrieben installieren. Die Installation der Standardpakete ist aufgrund patentrechtlicher Bestimmungen nicht ausreichend.

CSS-Anpassungen
Um modifizierte CSS-Dateien zu verketten, muss npm installiert sein.

Hardware

Als Mindestanforderung empfehlen wir:

  • Quad-Core-Prozessor
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 500 GB Festplattenspeicher (die benötigte Größe hängt im Wesentlichen von der Medienzahl ab)

Für den produktiven Einsatz empfehlen wir:

  • Hexa-Core-Prozessor oder besser (mehr Kerne ermöglichen insbesondere eine schnellere Transcodierung der Medien)
  • 32 GB RAM oder mehr
  • 2000 GB Festplattenspeicher oder mehr (die benötigte Größe hängt im Wesentlichen von der Medienzahl ab)

Wir empfehlen die Verwendung eines RAID-Controllers für zusätzliche Datensicherheit.
